This time, we're thrilled to introduce not only ONE but TWO NEW food items to our #ksistersfam! Just like every other new launches, several rounds of testing or in this case, tasting have been carried out within our team!

With our main goal of bringing only the BEST to our #ksistersfam, we've been searching high and low for the best Tteokbokki from Korea! After rounds and rounds of tasting various trending and popular Korean tteokbokki brands within the team, we finally arrived at a decision - Miro Restaurant Soup Tteokbokki! 🥳

If you ain't a fan of spicy food like tteokbokki, let us help satisfy your Korean street snacks cravings with Double Mozzarella Cheese Hot Dog! 🧀

분식 (Bunsik), which is also known as flour based food, refers to inexpensive and affordable Korean dishes that can be easily found along the street food districts or snack restaurants in Korea. If you're a fan of Korea's street food, you should have eaten before ramyeon, tteokbokki, corndog, gimbap and many more! It's a must to walk down the streets of Myeongdong or any parts of Seoul to get that street food fix!

    Miro Restaurant Soup Tteokbokki

    • 1 packet is 460g.
    • It can serve up to 2-3 individuals. However, it may differ based on individuals' consumption level.

    What is Tteokbokki?

Original Photo by mnimage [Red spicy tteokbokki]

    떡볶이 [Tteokbokki]: Spicy rice cakes
Famed as one of the most popular Korean street foods, it's something you can't miss out when you're back to travelling in Korea! Made from rice cake noodles called ‘tteokmyeon', tteokbokki is commonly paired with fish cakes, boiled eggs and seasoned with Gochujang sauce (spicy), but there are also soy sauced bases available for non-spicy individuals!

Unlike Gungjung Tteokbokki (Royal Court Rice Cake), the traditional version of tteokbokki, which has a soy sauce based sauce, the red spicy tteokbokki that everyone loves, was developed by a woman called Ma Bok-rim in 1953 (the end of Korean war), in the Sindang-dong neighbourhood in Seoul.

Original Photo by TMON [Gungjung Tteokbokki]

The dish was created thanks to her accidental drop of garaetteok (unseasoned, plain rice cakes) into a bowl of jajangeyeon (black soybean-sauce noodles). With food being regarded as a commodity after the war, she tried the dish to avoid food wastage. The sauces' flavour along with the rice cakes' chewy texture were blended so well together; that inspired her to try seasoning the rice cakes with the red pepper paste.

This tteokbokki with spicy gochujang sauce becomes an instant hit when people try and eat it as an affordable comfort snack. With the South Korean economy being developed over the years, various versions of the dish (with noodles, seafood and even short ribs being added) have proliferated ever since.

    Jungmin's Note: Why Tteokbokki?

I always thrive to hand-pick food that are not only delicious, but they can also be easily prepared in the comforts of #ksistersfam homes! With various travel restrictions, I wanted to make this childhood food readily available in Singapore for everyone to try it by bringing it from Korea to Singapore instead.

Tteokbokki is the soul food of many Koreans. That's one of the reasons why I've been looking for and craving for great authentic ones but to no avail. The tteokbokki I grew up with was prepared in a classic way without all the add-ons you see today. Writing this really makes me reminisce about my childhood, from eating them from street carts to market stalls as an after school activity.

Thankfully, a good friend of mine recommended this tteokbokki brand, MIRO, which stems from a very famous restaurant in Hongdae (you can only visit the restaurant via reservation!) Its tteokbokki dish is especially popular that they finally launched it as a ready made dish (so if you are unable to visit the restaurant, you can still enjoy the dish at home nevertheless)~

The sweet and savoury taste with that slight spicy kick remains irresistible to not only me but many individuals in Korea or even Singapore! Not forgetting the chewy texture from the rice cakes~

    Behind the Scenes

As we aim to bring the BEST to our #ksistersfam, we've tasted various trending and popular Korean tteokbokki brands within the team since last year November! We also recorded down to the last detail objectively, be it their tastes, texture, authenticity and presentation to ensure that we only select the best to bring to our #ksistersfam.

Check out the cooking video below!

Can you guess which one is Miro Resturant's Tteokbokki?

Note: Please kindly note that filming was carried out with safety measures in place.

    About Miro Restaurant Soup Tteokbokki

Miro Restaurant or Miro Sikdang (미로식당) is a small pub-like Korean restaurant located near Hongik University. Though located near to Hongdae (known for its urban arts and indie music culture, clubs and entertainment), it is located in a quiet alley, far from the food alley packed with lots of popular pubs; it's also run only by reservations.

Simple yet delicious homestyle Korean dishes such as bulgogi, their popular spicy whelk salad with Spam, and more are whipped up here and they're best paired with drinks! It's also a top secret that their Tteokbokki can only be tasted by regular customers too (the secret is out now)!

Miro Restaurant created their own version of tteokbokki (in Novemeber 2019) by considering the pain points of sweetness level some individuals struggled with. A convenient, fuss-free kit that consists of chewy wheat rice cake (we're in love with their texture!), secret sauce, and light fish cake!
Having left-over sauces? We'll recommend you to add in some rice to enjoy the remaining seasoning~

When you're having some midnight cravings, Miro Restaurant Soup Tteokbokki is perfect for you!
TIPS: If you're a fan of sweetness from vegetables, add in some cabbages, green onions or any vegetable of your choice! We're certain you'll love it!

    Did we mention:
Miro Restaurant Soup Tteokbokki also has a monthly average sales of approximately 69,000 packs in Korea!

After the  launch of its tteokbokki as a ready made dish, it became an amazingly popular product; all credits to its great taste! No marketing was done~

What we love about it: Their sauce has a great ratio of spiciness and sweetness; perfect when you eat them together with the chewy rice cakes and fish cake.

    What is Cheese Hot Dog?

    Original Photo by sasazawa

    (핫도그): Hot dog
While there's so many Korean street foods to talk about, corn dog is definitely one that you just can't miss out! Usually, going by the name of "hot dog" in the Korean language, Korean "hotdog" is usually wrapped with a chewy dough and deep-fried before being lightly coated in sugar. Then, you can finish it by adding condiments of your own choice.

In Korea, "hotdogs" are a tad different from those you find in places like New York, Seattle, Michigan where the sausage is stuffed in a bun with various ingredients and condiments. Korean hotdog also makes use of incorporating different ingredients, and that even includes taking out the sausage completely.

Korean hotdog also resembles more of a corn dog but it's definitely still so much more than one. Other than its dough, it can also be wrapped with cheese within and covered in breadcrumbs before being deep fried for that crispy goodness!

Jungmin's Note: Why Cheese Hot Dog?

I always thrive to hand-pick food that are not only delicious, but they can also be easily prepared in the comforts of #ksistersfam homes! With various travel restrictions, I wanted to make this childhood food readily available in Singapore for everyone to try it by bringing it from Korea to Singapore instead.

I gotta admit that there's too many childhood foods in Korea that I miss and corn dog is no doubt one of them too! While the ones I eat since young were french fry covered corndog, I'm definitely loving this styled of corn dog too! Trust me, you'll just keep eating! Writing this really makes me reminisce about my childhood, while I eat them to fend off my after school hunger!
